Movember and Men’s Health

Movember! A great month for us to focus on men’s health and nutrition.

Funds raised by Movember support two of the biggest health issues that men face – prostate cancer and male mental health. Nutrition can play an important role in reducing cancer risk and promoting good mood and general well-being.

We all know that eating more fruit and vegetables is good for us however tomatoes deserve a special mention! They are a great source of lycopene which is a powerful anti-oxidant which may offer protection against and slow down tumour growth in prostate cancer. Although most vegetables have a higher nutritional value when they are raw, more lycopene is released from cooked tomatoes so tomato sauce is a great source!

Other foods that contain lycopene are watermelon, grapefruit, guavas and apricots.

Food and mood are also strongly related. The ability to feel good comes from a diet that provides adequate amounts of carbohydrate at regular times to keep blood glucose level stable. Eating breakfast and making sure your meals contain a good source of carbohydrates such as wholegrain breads and cereals or brown rice help keep you alert and prevent you from feeling weak, tired and craving sugary foods.
